    Team: Canton Cardinals CANTON, MICHIGAN
« The 2008 10U Canton Cardinals have finished up a very successful travel season. The Cardinals, coached by Dan Hejka, won 80% of their games. The highlight of the season came on July 18 when the Cards won the USSSA AA World Series in Battle Creek. The Cardinals finished 7-0 in the tournament and averaged 11 runs per game. Brett Lee was named World Series MVP. Brett had 4 triples and a home run during the week, two of those triples came in the final game, a 15-14 win over Michigan Elite. Brett also caught the final out to seal the championship. Leading the way at the plate was Andrew Jossey. Jossey batted .800 and had 5 extra base hits and led the team with 10 RBI. Mike Groff batted .600 for the tournament with 8 RBI. Cameron Stella (.563) and Seth Hubbard (.556), and Andrew Hejka (.526) and the rest of the Cardinals all chipped in during the week with what seemed to be very timely hitting. On the mound the Cardinals were led by Grant Hartwig who shut out the Clarkston Riverdawgs twice during the World Series finishing 2-0, and Aaron Madsen who was also 3-0. Madsen came in to pitch the final two innings of the final game to earn the victory. Also coming up huge on the mound was Kevin Anthony who shut down the Battle Creek Bullets in four innings giving up only two hits. Stella, Hubbard, and Trevor McManus, were used mostly in relieving roles and cleaned up nicely when called upon. The Cardinals proved to be very tough in the field led by the 2nd base, shortstop, and centerfield combination of Stella, Hejka, and Cameron Shaughnessy. Others making big plays were made by McManus and Anthony at 3rd base and Hubbard at first. Behind the plate the depth of the Cardinal catchers proved to be too much for the opponents. Jossey, Mike Groff, and Hartwig were “brick walls” all week and threw out multiple runners attempting to steal. All in all it was a very fun, exciting week that will be remembered by all. The Cardinal family represented the community very well all week. The efforts and accomplishments of the boys proved what Coach Dan preaches to the boys on a daily basis… “It’s the little things that win games.” Dan is always proud of his boys, but he is especially proud of the teamwork that the boys displayed all season. Players play, but teams win. »
